Boating along the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal
Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal breach
Update February 2008: British Waterways is committing to a major programme of repairs to reopen the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal in time for the 2009 cruising season. The first phase will enable British Waterways to complete essential repair work to the Gilwern breach and priority areas identified along the 16 miles of affected canal by March 2009.
Throughout this year’s planned repair work we are intending to keep the towpath open, putting in diversions as and when necessary. British Waterways is committed to securing the long term future of this beautiful, historic canal which plays such an important role in the life and economy of South Wales.
Thank you for your co-operation.

Brecon to Cwmbran
Though the canal is not linked to any other waterways, several hire-boat bases offer everyone a chance to cruise this rewarding route.
There is only one flight of locks to tackle, at Llangynidr - making unhurried cruising a pleasure. Otherwise, the canal largely keeps to the level. This makes it a particularly welcoming canal for the novice or for smaller crews.
Visiting owners of trailable boats can launch their craft at several slipways on the main line. Boats can be up to 9ft 2in wide: for most craft, the low Ashford Tunnel will be the limiting dimension.
South of Cwmbran
The canal is not presently navigable through Cwmbran, as a result of 1960s road-building. However, towards the south of the town, the waterway is once again in evidence and can be canoed. Several of the locks and bridges on this stretch have now been restored, though at present, only owners of small boats are able to access this stretch. The Monmouthshire, Brecon & Abergavenny Canals Trust intends to restore the full line to navigation.
Malpas Junction, in the shadow of the M4, is the junction of the Main Line and the Crumlin Arm. Both canals are in water here, and the main line can be cruised into Newport. Bettws Lane Bridge used to block the navigation northwards towards Torfaen, was opened in March 2007.
The Crumlin Arm
The course of the Crumlin Arm is mostly intact between Cwmcarn and Malpas Junction. However, there are several blockages, and all but one of the 21 locks are currently unrestored - so opportunities for boating are restricted.
Trail-boat owners are advised to head for the immensely picturesque length around Crosskeys and Pontywaun, where boats may be launched by slipway. The canal is fully navigable here for one and a half miles.
In summer, you can take a trip on this section aboard the Monmouthshire, Brecon & Abergavenny Canal Trust's boat Jemima Morris. Trips operate at weekends from the Pontywaun terminus.
There are four slipways available on the canal:
Goytre Slipway (inc. parking, service facilities & moorings) owned by BWML and available for private use by 24 hour advanced booking only. Telephone: 01225 428778.
Pontymoile Slipway - Peter Young, Telephone: 07970 548810
Govilon Slipway - Govilon Boat Club, Telephone: 01443 813648
Pencelli Slipway - BW managed

Aberhonddu i Gwmbrân
Er nad yw’r gamlas wedi’i chysylltu ag unrhyw ddyfrffordd arall, mae amryw o gwmnïau llogi cychod yn rhoi cynnig i bawb fynd ar y daith werth chweil hon.
Dim ond un gyfres o lociau y bydd angen i chi fynd i’r afael â nhw a hynny yn Llangynidr sy’n gwneud hon yn daith hamddenol a phleserus. Fel arall, mae’r gamlas yn cadw at ei llinell ac yn ddelfrydol i bobl sy’n mynd ar y gamlas am y tro cyntaf neu i griwiau bach.
Mae sawl llithrfa ar y brif linell lle gall ymwelwyr sy’n berchen ar gwch y gellir ei dynnu lansio eu cychod. Gall cychod hyd at 9 troedfedd 2 fodfedd o led deithio ar y gamlas hon: y cyfyngiadau ar Dwnnel Ashford fydd y mwyaf y bydd raid i gychod ddygymod ag ef.
I’r de o Gwmbrân
Ar hyn o bryd, ni ellir mynd ar gwch drwy Gwmbrân, oherwydd gwaith ffordd y 1960au. Fodd bynnag, mae’r ddyfrffordd i’w gweld eto i’r de o’r dref a gellir teithio arni mewn can?. Mae amryw o’r llociau a phontydd ar y rhan yma o’r gamlas bellach wedi eu hadfer, ond ar hyn o bryd, dim ond cychod bach a all fynd arni. Bwriad Ymddiriedolaeth Camlesi Mynwy, Aberhonddu a’r Fenni yw adfer yr holl linell i gychod.
Cyffordd Malpas, yng nghysgod yr M4, yw cyffordd y Brif Linell a Changen Crymlyn. Mae’r ddwy gamlas mewn d?r fan hyn, a gellir teithio mewn cwch ar hyd y brif linell i Gasnewydd. Ym mis Mawrth 2007 agorwyd Pont Lôn y Betws a ddefnyddiwyd i rwystro cychod rhag teithio i Dorfaen.
Cangen Crymlyn
Mae cwrs Cangen Crymlyn bron yn gyflawn rhwng Cwmcarn a chyffordd Malpas. Fodd bynnag, mae yna lawer o rwystrau a dim ond un o’r 21 lloc sydd wedi ei adfer – felly prin yw’r cyfleoedd i deithio mewn cwch.
Mae perchnogion cychod tynnu’n cael eu cynghori i ymweld â’r rhan hyfryd, hir o’r gamlas rhwng Crosskeys a Phontywaun, lle gallant ddefnyddio llithrfa i lansio eu cychod. Mae’n bosibl teithio ar gwch am filltir a hanner yn y fan yma.
Yn yr haf, gallwch deithio ar hyd y rhan hon ar y Jemima Morris cwch Ymddiriedolaeth Camlas Mynwy, Aberhonddu a’r Fenni. Gellir teithio ar benwythnosau o Bontywaun.
