Stoppage: Breach at Gilwern Embankment
Associated Regional Office: BW Wales & BordersUpdate (21 February): British Waterways is committing to a major programme of repairs to reopen the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal in time for the 2009 cruising season. The first phase will enable British Waterways to complete essential repair work to the Gilwern breach and priority areas identified along the 16 miles of affected canal by March 2009.
Throughout this year’s planned repair work we are intending to keep the towpath open, putting in diversions as and when necessary. British Waterways is committed to securing the long term future of this beautiful, historic canal which plays such an important role in the life and economy of South Wales.
Latest Update - 12 November:
Our investigations are almost complete and our works programme is currently being compiled and we will have more information in the New Year.
The seriousness of the breach on the Monmouthshire and Brecon canal and the location where it occurred has led British Waterways to plan a detailed survey of a 16-mile stretch of the canal, from Llanover to Talybont (bridges 84 to 141). The navigation is closed between Ashford Tunnel (upstream of Bridge 141) and Bridge 84 and the towpath is closed between Bridge 110 and Bridge 105.
Initial assessments indicate that significant works may be required to secure the canal infrastructure and it is likely that the affected stretch of canal will not be available for cruising in 2008. The investigation over the next six weeks will give us a much clearer picture as to how this might be achieved.
The canal and associated waterside businesses from Talybont to Brecon and Llanover to Cwmbran remain unaffected by the works.
