“Tea and delicious home-made cake”
Follow brown signs from Maesbury Marsh village to the Canal Central café located 0.5km south of the village. There is a surfaced car park at the café, with marked parking bays near to the two access points onto the towpath. Both access points are at the bridge, one is a rolled stone surface with quite a steep slope, the other a flat route through trees which could get muddy at some times of the year.

The Canal Centre has a café and shop with disabled facilities, tables inside and out and a friendly welcome. There is also a 2 bedroom flat for rent upstairs.

2) Llanymynech

“Visit the beautiful Carreghofa Lock”
There is a council car park at the rear of the Dolphin pub with a hard surface and marked bays. Access to the canal is through a gate from the car park onto the towpath which is smooth and flat and recently resurfaced. The gate is suitable for wheelchair users.

The new stone surface will take you all the way to Carreghofa Locks one mile (1.6km) south.

"An ideal spot for a picnic"

The site is located a 2.5 km south of Arddllin on the A483.The car park is next to Wernpit nature reserve. The surface is unbound dirt and stone and there are no parking bays marked. The surface is rough and can get puddled in wet weather. The entry onto the towpath is almost level, the surface is chipped stone and changes to grass on the towpath. This section can get muddy when wet.

This is an ideal spot for a picnic and a spot of fishing in the Montgomery Canal. There are a few picnic tables and benches on site. The nearest village is Arddlin which has a couple of pubs.

"Excellent for anglers"

The wharf is just to the north of Welshpool, off the A483 at a roundabout near bridge 115. There is a small car park with just enough space for two to three cars. The surface is rolled stone and there are no marked parking bays. There are two points of access, both suitable for wheelchair users. There is a gentle slope onto the towpath at the rear of the car park with a rolled stone surface and also a pedestrian gate adjacent to the bridge. There are a couple of picnic benches, an excellent place for fishing and old lime kilns to explore.

"Easy access to a scenic stretch of the Monty"

The canal runs towards the eastern side of the town passing gardens, wharves and warehouses. There is plenty to do in Welshpool and parking is available close to the canal. Visit the Powysland Museum, with its permanent display about the canal, or nearby Powis Castle. The easiest access point is at Severn Bridge, opposite the museum.

Following extensive towpath improvement there is now a new, rolled stone surface to the towpath from the centre of Welshpool all the way to Belan Locks 2.5 km away. Park in the town or at Belan Locks which has a large surfaced car park leading directly onto the towpath. There are also picnic tables and barbeque points. Belan Locks is reached from the roundabout with the A483 and A490 to the south of Welshpool.

Between Welshpool and Belan, visit the Whitehouse Nature Reserve; an old section of canal which forms a tranquil pond. Rest on the “leaping fish” seat and keep an eye out for basking grass snake.

Contact the Heulwen Trust to see if you are eligible for a free cruise on the canal in their barge adapted for disabled use (Heulwen Trust 01938 552563).

6) Berriew

“Dramatic aqueduct over the River Rhiw”

Follow signs for the picnic site, just passed the Andrew Logan Museum of Sculpture. The car park, access ramp and towpath have recently been resurfaced with rolled stone and there is now a ramp all the way up to the towpath although it is rather steep.

Once on the towpath you can picnic under shady trees, watch the River Rhiw from the aqueduct or walk on the towpath. There is about 1km of resurfaced towpath and a grass surface otherwise.

Have a look around the pretty village of Berriew with its many black and white houses, pubs, church, shops and walk by the river.
