Wildlife along the Montgomery Canal
The Montgomery Canal is one of the most important waterways for wildilfe in Britain. Much of its length is a declared Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs).
Of particular interest to botanists is the floating water plantain (Luronium natans), for which the canal is one of the most significant sites in the world. British Waterways and the canal restorers are working very closely with the Countryside Council for Wales and English Nature to ensure the sustainable restoration and future management of this valuable environmental asset.
The line is also home to a number of rare flora and fauna. Wildlife provisions have been respected during restoration: for example, at Aston Locks, volunteers worked for over a year to create an off-line nature reserve.
