Netherton Tunnel Branch

The Netherton Tunnel Branch Canal is largely taken up by the Netherton Tunnel itself – an impressive feat of 19th century engineering which (unusually) boasts twin towpaths, so cyclists and walkers can also explore this piece of industrial history.

The past is still very much present as you leave Dudley Port Junction and head along the very straight Netherton Tunnel Branch. Industry flanks both sides of the canal and you will pass a wharf and a row of canal cottages before reaching the tunnel portal. The tunnel itself is 3058 yards long and very dark now that lighting is no longer provided. Watch out for the ventilation shafts in the roof which often drip water onto unsuspecting boaters.
Emerging at the Dudley end of the tunnel, boaters can enjoy a well-earned break at Windmill End. Moor up, enjoy a pint at the Dry Dock or take a wander around the scenic Bumble Hole.
