North Walsham & Dilham Canal
The North Walsham & Dilham Canal ran from the Dilham Dyke entrance to Antingham, a distance of 8.5 miles. It provided a trade route link to the Rivers Ant and Bure and from there, on to Great Yarmouth. Only a small section between Swafield and Honing, open to light craft, is still open since the canal's last use in 1935.
The canal is being restored and those interested can contact the East Anglian Waterways Association, who hold monthly meetings on the canal, for more information.
The North Walsham & Dilham Canal was commenced in 1825, required, thanks to a thiriving wool trade in North Walsham. Flour and grain would be transported to Great Yarmouth and building materials and coal would be brought back. As with all the canals, trade declined in the mid-19th Century and ceased altogether by the 1880s, although leisure use did continue, as it does, to a very limited extent, today.
