Nottingham Beeston Canal

Moored narrowboats on the Nottingham Canal, Nottingham

The surviving Nottingham Beeston Canal is a stub of a much longer historic route, but still forms an essential part of the water route through Nottingham and the River Trent navigation.

Today's Nottingham Beeston Canal is simply a bypass for an unnavigable stretch of the River Trent. Running through central Nottingham, it is popular with walkers and cyclists, and attracts many boats as part of the Trent through-route.

It was built as part of a much longer route - now derelict - that provided Nottingham with its first direct link to the coalfields to the north.
