Boating along the Oxford Canal

The southern Oxford Canal is justifiably popular with boaters. Unlike the greatly changed northern Oxford, most of the southern half was left untouched by the mid-19th century straightening programme. Though the winding course must have frustrated generations of working boatmen, it all adds to the charm of a cruise today.

This section of the canal is peppered with simple black-and-white lift bridges. Many of these, which serve as accesses for farmers, are left open. However, at times you may have to land a crew member on the bank to open them.

Favourite mooring spots, such as the villages of Thrupp and Cropredy, can fill up early on summer afternoons. There are plentiful moorings in Oxford and Banbury, though, and the canal in Oxford is particularly popular with residential boaters.
