The towpath is part of the Cheshire Ring Canal Walk, a 97-mile towpath walk via Greater Manchester and rural Cheshire. It follows the six historic canals that form this popular cruising ring, including the Macclesfield Canal, Peak Forest Canal and Trent & Mersey Canal. It also connects with European Long Distance Path E2 that runs from Galway in Ireland to Nice in the South of France.

There are numerous walks and trails near the canal. Brabyns Park, in Marple, has woodland, parkland and playing fields between the Peak Forest Canal and the River Goyt.
