Ripon Canal
One of the most northerly canals in England, the short Ripon Canal runs for just 2.5 miles from Ripon town centre to its junction with the River Ure at Oxclose Lock - and hence to the River Ouse and the other waterways of Yorkshire. Abandoned in 1956, the Ripon Canal was subsequently reopened as far as Ripon town centre.
Ripon is one of the smallest cities in England. Medieval and Georgian buildings line twisty lanes: the market square leads to Minstergate and the cathedral.
Founded over 1300 years ago, Ripon has a rich cultural heritage that is still very much in evidence today. In addition to the 7th-century Cathedral, the city boasts many historic buildings, museums and monuments. Ripon also has all the benefits of contemporary living; good food, fascinating shops and a rich calendar of cultural entertainment and events.
The local Tourist Information Centre is opposite the cathedral and open throughout the summer season.
