Cycling along the Ripon Canal

Cycling is not permitted on the Ripon Canal towpath.

However, you might like to try the 33-mile circular ride along the Eastern foothills of the Dales, through the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It starts and finishes at Knaresborough, which is easily reachable by train from Leeds, Harrogate and York. Most of the journey is either along minor roads, country lanes or the canal towpath. The route between Ripley and Kirkby Malzeard is hilly, but from there on it's either downhill or mostly flat.

The route passes Fountains Abbey, Ripon Cathedral, Kirkby Malzeard and some majestic estates set in the beauty of the Vale of York.
