Walking along the River Avon (Stratford)
As with many river navigations, the River Avon does not have a continuous towpath. However, there are many opportunities for walking along its banks. Public footpaths exist at these places:
- Tewkesbury to Twyning Fleet (2.5 miles): north bank
- Strensham Lock to Eckington Bridge (2 miles): south bank
- Around Pershore (1.5 miles): north bank
- Cropthorne to Chadbury (3.5 miles): path on north bank, then on minor roads through Fladbury, and continuing a short distance from the north bank to Chadbury
- Around Evesham (4 miles): north bank
- George Billington Lock, Offenham, to Stratford (11 miles): south bank, with diversion through Welford-on-Avon. The 9 miles between Marlcliff and Stratford have been signposted as the Avon Valley Walk.
The Avon Valley Circular Walks are a new series of four waymarked walks along the River Avon in Worcestershire and Warwickshire. Each of the circular walks is comprehensively waymarked and signposted, making them easy for people to follow without the fear of getting lost. Three of the walks are 3.5 miles long and one is 5 miles. There are no stiles, just easy to use gates, and this, combined with gentle gradients and moderate distances, means that the walks can easily be enjoyed by less experienced walkers.
Free, full-colour leaflets, containing a brief route description and a simple map, are available for each of the walks from local Tourist Information Centres, libraries and other visitor attractions. Information about local wildlife and history is described and illustrated both in the leaflets and on panels along the walks.
