Wildlife along the River Bure

Ranworth is a great place to see wildlife close at hand. You can walk out to the Broads Wildlife Centre or take an electric ferry trip over from the moorings on board Helen, named after the St Helen's Church - 'the cathedral of the Broads'. There are also spectacular views from the top of the church tower, as well as a visitor centre, back at ground level.

In recent times, increasingly murky waters throughout the Broads led to concern over the future of many plants and animals. Concerted effort by local and national conservation groups, working with the Broads Authority, is reversing this trend. An example of this can be seen just off the Bure at Cockshoot Broad, where a great deal of conservation work has been done in an attempt to remedy the situation. Much of the flora and fauna is now thriving again as a result of these cleaner waters.

The Bure shares in the rich ecology of Broadland. You might see the Norfolk Hawker dragonfly, the bittern - with its distinctive booming cry - or the swallowtail butterfly. In terms of flora there are a whole host of species, including hemp agrimony, rare varieties of orchids and the more common yellow flag; while on the water glide the commonly seen coots and mallards, sometimes alongside elegant swans or great crested grebes.
