The Falls of Clyde at the head of the river form part of a nature reserve. The reserve is host to over 100 species of bird including a pair of nesting Peregrine falcons. There are also otters, bats and kingfishers.

Further down the river, the removal of industry has resulted in an improved water quality and a return of sea trout and salmon.
