River Colne

The Colne flows seaward from Colchester for 11 miles and is a long-established tidal navigation where sandbarges still ply. Largely unspoilt, most of the river is a Site Of Scientific Special Interest with reserves on either bank. Upper reaches can effectively dry out at low water.

The area around Pyefleet is noted for its shellfish and seafood. Riverside buildings date from the 17th Century. Small boat owners will find many nooks and creeks to explore near the mouth. Brightlingsea has been described as ‘the pearl of Essex.'
