There are many Sites Of Scientific Special Interest and wildlife reserves along the river.

Gravel diggings have created lakes fed by the river, providing homes for birds including the great crested grebe, tufted duck, moorhen, coot and mallard. Flowering rush, purple loosestrife and some less common sedges grow. On its open water grow fringed water lily and other aquatics.
