Fishing along the River Cuckmere

Sea trout make their way up through the Cuckmere in spawn in the gravels of the northern tributaries during January and February. The young fish or parr spend about two years in these head streams. Once at the sea the rich feeding enables them to grow rapidly until they return to the river to join the winter spawning migration. The iron rich streams also support small but highly coloured wild brown trout as well as minnows and stoneloach.

The Cuckmere holds a very good mixed population of coarse fish throughout most of its length. Dace and perch appear in the middle reaches and in the lower, slower flowing reaches species such as bream and carp predominate.

Angling for coarse fish stretches from Milton Lock upstream to Cowbeech and above this the waters are fished mainly for brown trout. The River above Sherman Bridge is suitable for high class game and coarse fisheries; the downstream section is also well maintained for coarse fishing. There are a number of lakes and ponds that can be fished along with Arlington Reservoir.
