Wildlife along the River Cuckmere

In partnership with other organisations including English Nature, the Sussex Down Conservation Board and the National Trust, the Environment Agency works to protect the Cuckmere's natural habitats.

Part of the importance of the Cuckmere is the range of habitats, including marine, saltmarsh, shingle, mudflat and freshwater.

The lower part of the river and its floodplain are important for both passage and windering birds including teal, wigeon and snipe. The meadows and drainage ditches that dissect them also support a number of unusual plants.

Wet meadows, ditches, reedbeds and ponds are all freshwater habitats. These areas support plants such as the southern marsh orchid, meadow sweet, wild angelica and great pondsedge as well as breeding reed and sedge warblers.
