History of the River Don
Once upon a time, the River Don was counted among the most succesful salmon fisheries in the land. Rumour has it that young Sheffield apprentices, bored with eating so much salmon, had it written into their contracts that they would only be fed salmon three times a week!
The Don also achieved fame through being the location for the first recorded use of water power for industry, although sadly the river became a victim of its own success when the consequent steel mills (used in the making of the famed Sheffield Steel) caused the river to become polluted and salmon populations to dwindle.
Happily, this is no longer the case and the Don is now a cleaner and healthier river.
