History of the River Dove

Mesolithic remains have been found in a cave near High Wheeldon – a large hill downstream of Hollinsclough. However, the River Dove's place is history was largely secured by the writings of Izzak Walton.

Izzak Walton, and his close friend Charles Cotton, were both keen anglers and regular visitors to Bereford Dale. In 1653 Walton achieved considerable acclaim through the publication of The Compleat Angler – a fishing manual which has sold more copies than the bible and only once been out of print.
