Boating along the River Foss
The historic Castle Mill Lock is now open to the boating public. It is operated by members of the Inland Waterways Association, who are based in and around the historic city of York. They are members of new section called the North Riding (Start-up) Branch, which, if the planned launch goes to schedule will officially become a full branch of the IWA on Friday 1st April 2011.
Lock Keeper Training
We are currently recruiting new lock keepers. You have to be, or become, a member of the IWA (for insurance purposes)to be able to operate the locks.
Please contact: Tony Martin (Head Lock Keeper) on: 07588-236-597 OR e-mail him on tonymartin451@yahoo.co.uk.
Passage into the River Foss
If you would like to explore the River Foss, which is naviagable for 2.5 miles upto Monk Bridge. Boats upto 60ft in length, and 2-5 foot draft can reach this point, where there is a winding hole. Any longer, or deeper, craft will have problems.
Height is critical
The height of the boat is critical, as Leyerthorpe Bridge is very low. No flybridge cruisers will get further than Hungate. Chimneys and TV ariels will have to be taken down.
Water levels
These are also critical.
