Walking along the River Irwell
A really interesting walk here is The Irwell Sculpture Trail - a total of 30 miles long, although you can walk from and to any point of your choosing along the way. The trail contains 35 commissioned works of contemporary art in the form of outdoor sculptures. It follows the valley of the River Irwell, from the north of Manchester north to Bacup and from there onto the Claviger Moors.
The five mile section between Ramsbottom and Rawtenstall is interesting if for nothing other than to wave at the passengers going past on the now preserved East Lancashire Light Railway steam trains.
The riverside paths are narrow and often muddy in places, if it has been raining.
