Cycling along the River Lee

The waterway provides a car-free route from London to Hertfordshire.

Please cycle on London's towpaths with great care and courtesy to others, observing the new Towpath Code of Conduct and ringing your bell with Two Tings towpath safety.

  • Bow Locks to Lea Bridge (5.6km): At Bow Wharf, beware of traffic on the towpath, where it crosses the A11 roundabout. Dismount. Also dismount at Lea Bridge, where there is a blind corner and low headroom.
  • Lea Bridge to Tottenham Lock (3.6km)
  • Tottenham Lock to Enfield Lock (9.6km): Beware of traffic on the towpath at Angel Road Industrial Estate.
  • Enfield Lock to Waltham Town Lock (2.5km): Dismount at Hazlemere Bridge: steep bridge, no visibility. Also dismount at the Old English Gentleman: low headroom and blind corner.
  • Waltham Town Lock to Carthagena Lock (7.3km): Towpath busy at the Crown pub. Dismount and walk round.
  • Carthagena Lock to Feilde's Weir Lock (2.8km): Dismount when the towpath crosses Dobbs Weir Road.
  • Feilde's Weir Lock to Ware Town (6.5km): Towpath can be muddy or narrow - take care. Dismount past pedestrians.
  • Ware Town to Ware Lock (1km): Risk of pot-holes. Dismount near town when there are pedestrians.
  • Ware Lock to Hertford (3.3km): Hertford Basin/Barge pub: dismount when busy with pedestrians.

At many places the towpath crosses over main roads - please take care.

By following the banks of the other lakes and rivers in the valley, and by wending your way through some of the most attractive meadows and tree lined pathways in the Lee Valley Park, you can enjoy even more miles of car-free cycling.
