Fishing along the River Nene
Fishing is popular on the Nene, especially on the north bank, and there are good chub grounds near Peterborough. The river is brimming with carp and tench; bream and roach are less likely due to little movement of the water. Up past Northampton chub and dace are a more likely proposition and Ringstead Shallows is the place to fish for carp.
Coarse fishing is available at Yarwell Mill, nr Wansford (01780 782247) and at Ringstead Island near Thrapston (01604 820380).
Anyone aged 12 years or over who fishes for salmon, trout, freshwater fish or eels must have a valid rod licence (obtainable from post offices, or directly from the Environment Agency). This is in addition to a permit, available from Peterborough and District Angling Club, required to fish the non-tidal Nene west of Whittlesey.
The River Nene is controlled by The Peterborough and District Angling Association (tel: 01733 571676) and March Working Men's Club (tel: 01354 653223).
