Advice: 350m downstream of Barnby Barrage

Associated Regional Office: BW Yorkshire

Update : 30 March 2009

Notice still applies - Next Update by end of July.

Please be advised that the marker buoy, which located the underwater hazard, of the old Drax railway bridge pier, approximately 350m downstream of the Barnby Barrage (River Derwent), is missing. Until divers can be organised to attach a new marker buoy, there is a need for all vessels to navigate with care, as the obstruction is in mid channel and protrudes above the current bed, due to scour.

A further update will be issued in March 2009.

Advice: Selby Railway Bridge

Associated Regional Office: BW Yorkshire

The stop/go river navigation light on the railway bridge at Selby has been non operational and classed as obsolete for a number of years. Due to increased risk of collapse of the lights mounting post Network Rail have applied to British Waterways for permission to remove the light. Consequently British Waterways have gained sanction from Trinity House to remove the light.

Users of the Navigation are advised that the obsolete light and mounting post will be removed from the bridge before the Winter 2009. The light will not be replaced. All current aids to navigation on the bridge will remain in place and fully operational.

Restriction: Clifton Reach, between Clifton & Scarborough bridges, North East Side

Associated Regional Office: BW Yorkshire

Anticipated 8-10 weeks
Workboats are installing piles, placing river bed protection mattresses and bank repairs using divers working in the river backfilling to voids in bank behind existing wall.

It is not anticipated that craft will experience any delay. However they should approach and pass the working area slowly to minimise wash, keeping well clear of the working craft and be prepared to stop if requested to do so until a safe route is cleared past the works.

Advice: Linton Lock

Associated Regional Office: North East Waterways

UPDATE (05 November 2009): British Waterways engineers have inspected the lock tail gates and are arranging to carry out some modifications to the balance beams in the next few weeks. It is hoped that this will help improve the operation, however, it is anticipated that the gates will remain heavy and therefore, it is recommended that customers continue to operate the gates in pairs.
Further consideration for improvements to the gates are being considered in the coming months
British Waterways apologise for the inconvenience caused.

Due to the increasing difficulty of closing the downstream gates, it is advised that at all times this lock should not be operated single handed. Where possible single handed craft should try and double up.
British Waterways are seeking engineer advice on possible solutions to this problem. We will issue further advice after consultations have taken place.
