River Rother (East)
From historic Rye to Bodiam Castle, the River Rother is one of the finest rural rivers in England.
The 'Eastern' Rother - one of two Southern rivers with this name - has been navigated for centuries. It meets the English Channel at Rye, one of the Cinque Ports, which was first chartered in the 12th Century. This beautiful fortified town is justifiably popular with tourists.
The river is tidal through Rye, with an impressive tidal range. Sailing boats and motor cruisers cluster in the town and its harbour - an attractive sight at any time of year.
Further upstream, the river flows peacefully through the High Weald to Bodiam Castle, a magnificent 14th century ruin.
