Cycling along the River Severn
Because the Severn does not have a continuous towpath, there's no designated riverside cycling route. However, in October 2005 Sustrans opened National Cycle Network route 45 to follow the Severn Valley all the way from Shrewsbury, through Bridgnorth and Stourport, to Worcester.
The well-established Severn & Thames Cycle Route links the River Severn with the River Thames. Starting in Gloucester, it runs along the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal and the Severn Estuary to Bristol. It continues to Bath along a disused railway line, then follows the Kennet & Avon Canal to Reading. 128 miles in total, it follows National Cycle Network routes 4 and 41, which are well signposted.
The Severn Way walking route itself is not generally open for cycling, but there is limited access in major cities such as Shrewsbury and Worcester.
