Wildlife along the River Soar
The River Soar is rich in wildlife. Swans, moorhen and drakes are joined by Canada geese in the summer. The waters hold many coarse fish including perch, pike and bream. The river also boasts healthy populations of the endangered white-clawed crayfish, a protected species which is under threat from imported American varieties which have escaped into the wild.
The river was once notorious for its unusual pink colour - a result of discharges from Leicester's thriving textile industries. Clean-up work by the Environment Agency has now largely restored it to its natural state, with resulting improvements for fish and other wildlife.
