Cycling along the River Stort
Cyclists can use several sections of the towpath, as long as they have a valid British Waterways cycling permit - this can be downloaded free of charge. Most of the towpath is unmade, and can be very muddy and rough. Be prepared to climb over stiles and gates.
Local details are:
- Feildes Weir to Roydon Lock (2.6km): Take care if muddy. Risk of pot-holes and narrow sections.
- Roydon Lock to Burnt Mill Lock (4.3km): No cycling permitted.
- Burnt Mill Lock to Latton Lock (1.6km): Beware of pot-holes and narrow towpath below Latton Lock.
- Latton Lock to Harlow Lock (1.8km): No cycling permitted.
- Harlow Lock to Sawbridgeworth Lock (4.1km): Take care where the towpath is narrow.
- Sawbridgeworth Lock to Hallingbury Marina (2.3km): Towpath narrows at Kecksey's railway bridge - dismount.
- Hallingbury Marina to Bishops Stortford (5.5km): Dismount when the towpath crosses roads.
