The waterways environment provides a haven for a wide variety of wildlife, and has become increasingly important for nature conservation. Many wild flowers such as cowslips, marsh marigolds , ragged robin and Indian Balsam can be found along the river.

Many species of wetland birds can be found on and around the Rivers Lee and Stort, as the area is important for breeding, feeding and resting during migration. Tufted duck, shoveler, gadwell and great crested grebes are all common in the Lee Valley, with other popular waterbirds such as the grey heron, cormorant and kingfisher also enjoying the diverse habitat.
