River Stour (Kent)

The Stour flows for 21.5 miles from Canterbury to the sea at Pegwell Bay, describing a huge southwards arc through east Kent. An ancient tidal navigation it has strong currents and is more suited to navigators familiar with shifting sands and flood runs.

Sandwich was one of the Cinque Ports, first chartered in the 12th Century, and was a leading harbour in the wool trade. Above Sandwich passage is only possible for small boats to Fordwich. Beyond here requires portage.
