Walking along the River Tees

Walkers will see a changing riverscape at different access points. At Stockton, the Teesdale site boasts superb architecture and paved walkways; towards Yarm, the views become semi-rural, the riverbanks more wooded; and even further upstream, the Tees closes in, almost completely overghung by trees.

The Teesdale Way and the Pennine Way are long-distance footpaths which pass through the area, but waymarkers en route allow you to cut and paste the length of walk you wish to make. If you'd rather, you can take one of the many organised tours on offer, or just ramble along at your leisure.

Hamsterley Forest on the edge of Teesdale and Weardale covers an area of 2000 hectares, and there is plenty to do here - nature and forest walks, orienteering courses and mountain bike routes. All sorts of events are organised year-round. You can also hire bikes from Rush Cyclery there.
