Walking along the River Teign
There is plenty for the well-prepared walker to explore on the unspoilt wilderness of Dartmoor. The total area of over 250 square miles encompasses windswept open moorland, a sprinkling of small villages, farms and river valleys and is a haven for walkers. Short, circular pub walks cater for those seeking a pleasant afternoon stroll, with welcoming refreshment at the end. Serious walkers will find plenty to keep them busy among the grassy tors and woodland.
Haytor, with its two imposing granite outcrops is a favourite destination for explorers. Walkers who achieve the summit can then enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding moorland, the rugged coast and the Teign estuary. The Templar Way follows the path of the Teign from Haytor down to the sea.
Dartmoor occupies high ground and is unusually close to the coast. Because of this it can experience swift changes in the weather, with dense fogs falling suddenly and without warning. Walkers should always carry a good map and a compass, and beware of boggy areas on the high moors.
