Cycling along the River Thames
Virtually all of the towpath alongside the river is privately owned but designated as public footpath. As such cyclists have no rights to ride on the towpath - although it is not a criminal offence to do so, provided that no obstruction or damage is caused to the towpath. The riding of cycles is prohibited on the towpath through lock gardens and riverside public parks.
Much of the towpath is incorporated into the Thames Path National Trail which has been designated as a long distance walking route alongside the Thames. However, in many places there is not sufficient path width for walkers and cyclists to safely pass. In addition, the surface conditions along much of the path are often unsuitable for cyclists.
Walkers always have priority over cyclists who should give way accordingly. Just over five miles (8.4 km) of the Thames Path have bridleway or higher status, along which cyclists have a right to pass but most of these sections are away from the riverside.
It is generally easier to cycle alongside the river downstream from Maidenhead and in the urban areas of Reading and Oxford. In London, side roads and borough council tracks should be followed east of Putney Bridge where the towpath ceases. Upstream from Maidenhead, stiles, gates, difficult surfaces and restricted path widths in places will make cycling less straightforward.
Cycling along the Thames Path is facilitated by the Highways Authorities through Oxford, Reading, from Boveney to Windsor, and from Weybridge to Hampton Court Bridge. Walkers always have priority on footpaths by the river and cyclists should ride in a thoughtful and courteous manner and must avoid causing any damage to the path.
Sustrans also offers a 97-mile route called the Thames Valley Cycle Route, from London (Putney Bridge) to Oxford along 40 miles of traffic-free paths (including towpaths along the Thames), and minor roads through the countryside as far as possible.
