Walking along the River Thames
Let the River Thames gradually unravel its secrets as you walk along the Thames Path. The 184 miles of the Path offer easy, level walking and can be enjoyed in many ways, whether for an afternoon stroll, a weekend break or a full scale trek of the entire length from its source to Teddington and on to the Thames Barrier.
The Thames Path is one of only 13 National Trails in England, and is easily accessible by public transport. You can split the trail over several days and stay overnight at one of the many campsites, B&Bs and hotels along the river. For detailed information about the Thames Path, call the National Trails Office on 01865 810224 or visit www.nationaltrails.gov.uk.
The Thames and its Path can be enjoyed at any time of year but the months between April and November are considered the best for wildlife and the changing countryside colours. Lightweight comfortable shoes are suitable for gentle walking in the summer, but in the wet months put on your wellingtons or walking boots. Rain does sometimes affect the path, particularly west of Oxford, so check with the Environment Agency's Flood Information line on 0845 988 1188.
The beauty of a trail along a river is that it is so easy to follow the route! In addition good signage and helpful lock keepers along the way will ensure you don't get lost and will point out all the interesting places. So put your walking boots on and enjoy meandering the day away.
The Thames is also accessible for those with a disability. The Landscape Strategy has recently published, in partnership with the Environment Agency and the Countryside Agency, a guide to ten easily accessible walks around the Richmond area. The guide includes large print maps and is easy to follow. Copies can be obtained from the Thames Landscape Strategy, c/o Holly Lodge, Richmond Park, Richmond TW10 5HS. Call 020 8940 0654 or email tls@richmond.gov.uk.
The Ramblers' Association exists to facilitate, for the benefit of everyone, the enjoyment and discovery that walking outdoors can bring, and to promote respect for the life of the countryside. Visit www.ramblers.org.uk.
If you're looking for a bit of inspiration for a walk, a Thames & Chilterns Walk leaflet is available from local Tourist Information Centres and Thames locks, covering a range of different walks from Henley-on-Thames along the River Thames and into the Chiltern Hills.
