Wildlife along the River Tweed

Looking over the River Tweed towards the Eildon Hills (the view much loved by the poet and writer, Sir Walter Scott), near Melrose, Scottish Borders. PIC: P.TOMKINS/VisitScotland/SCOTTISH VIEWPOINT

The area around the Tweed abounds with all manner of wildlife. Along the riverbanks, rare water voles and otters make their home alongside herons, kingfishers and sandpipers. The widespread mallard is joined by the less common cormorant over the winter months and oystercatchers appear in the spring. Swifts and martins can also be seen swooping over the river in search of insects.
