Durham Cathedral on the River Wear

The navigable River Wear runs for around 10.5 miles from Chester le Street to Sunderland and the sea. It passes right through the heart of the City of Sunderland.

There is a myth regarding Worm Hill near the river, involving a vengeful worm which grows into a huge dragon that terrorises the countryside. Its slayer neglects to fulfil a witch's advice on killing the worm which results in nine generations of untimely deaths in his family.
