Wildlife along the River Witham
The area around Beckingham has wet grassland areas that provide ideal conditions for wild flowers, insects and birds. The river itself supports a large swan population around the city of Lincoln.
Ostlers Plantation, near Woodhall Spa, is a Forestry Commission-run woodland. Once a Second World War airfield - the area is still studded with military bases - it has been replanted with trees, and attracts a wide variety of wildlife, including all manner of bats, birds, butterflies and snakes. The 'pirri pirri' burr is an imported plant found in the wood, and is thought to have arrived on the boots of airmen from New Zealand!.
