Boating along the River Wye

The Wye is perhaps Britain's foremost canoeing river. Canoeists can enjoy uninterrupted access all the way downstream of Glasbury-on-Wye, through the book town of Hay-on-Wye, down to Hereford, Monmouth and the Severn Estuary. There are campsites at regular intervals along the river.

The boating mecca on the Wye is Symonds Yat. This outstandingly picturesque spot also offers canoe hire, motorised passenger boat trips, and a deservedly popular waterside pub, the Saracen's Head. The Symonds Yat rapids were recently purchased by the British Canoe Union, with help from the Environment Agency. Just downstream of the village, these rapids are both a perennial challenge for canoeists - and entertainment for bystanders.

Motor boats can navigate the tidal section to Tintern and potentially another five miles upstream to Bigsweir. Passage further upstream is discouraged, though navigators with local knowledge have occasionally continued as far upstream as Hereford in flood conditions.

Teithio mewn cychod ar hyd yr Afon Gwy

Mae’n bosibl mai’r Afon Gwy yw’r afon orau ym Mhrydain ar gyfer can?io. Mae gan gan?-wyr fynediad llawn yr holl ffordd i lawr yr afon o’r Clas ar Wy, trwy dref lyfrau’r Gelli Gandryll, tuag at Henffordd, Mynwy ac Aber yr Afon Hafren. Mae nifer o feysydd gwersylla yr holl ffordd i lawr yr afon.

Symonds Yat yw’r gyrchfan fwyaf boblogaidd ar yr Afon Gwy ar gyfer cychwyr. Mae’r llecyn hardd hwn hefyd yn cynnig gwasanaeth llogi can?au a theithiau mewn cwch modur. Yn ogystal, mae yna dafarn hynod o boblogaidd ar lan y d?r o’r enw’r Saracen's Head. Prynwyd dyfroedd gwyllt Symonds Yat yn ddiweddar gan Undeb Can?io Prydain gyda chymorth Asiantaeth yr Amgylchedd. I lawr yr afon o gyfeiriad y pentref, mae’r dyfroedd gwyllt yn cynnig her ddi-baid i gan?-wyr ac adloniant heb ei ail i’r bobl sy’n gwylio.

Gall cychod modur fordwyo’r darn sydd o fewn cyrraedd y llanw i Dyndyrn ac, o bosibl, bum milltir arall i fyny’r afon i Bigsweir. Nid yw pobl yn cael eu hargymell i deithio ymhellach i fyny’r afon, er bod ambell i gychwr sy’n gyfarwydd iawn â’r ardal wedi parhau i fyny’r afon cyn belled â Henffordd yn ystod llifogydd.
