Herefordshire activity guide
Herefordshire activity guide
However, this is also one of the quietest parts of the country and it is worth taking time to enjoy a quiet riverside stroll or to stop for a drink at one of the many waterside hostelries.
The waymarked Wye Valley Walk follows the river’s course through rich farmland whilst many country pubs and B&Bs lie close to the river at intervals making them ideal resting places during your journey. Several are award-winning establishments, combining style and comfort with the best of locally sourced food and drink. What better way to banish thoughts of aching limbs than with Hereford beef or Marches lamb washed down with local wine or cider?
Cycling is an increasingly popular way of touring the countryside and whether you bring your own bicycles or hire locally, the quiet lanes of Herefordshire invariably bring you back towards the Wye. Mini-guides are available with short circular routes as well as suggestions of the most suitable lanes for a strictly riverside ride. See www.visitherefordshire.co.uk for more details on these and other routes around the county.
Canoeists possibly get the best view of the river and at Hay on Wye and Symonds Yat there are professional centres providing equipment and tuition. Enjoy paddling towards the Cathedral City of Hereford or to Ross on Wye, passing country estates and woods, whilst there are many landing places for you to stop, stretch your legs and enjoy the local scenery and heritage.
For those spare moments why not wander into Hereford itself and visit the historic Cathedral or visit one of the many gardens that lie close to the river, such as Brobury House or How Caple Court. Ross on Wye is an attractive riverside town with interesting shops whilst Goodrich Castle towers over the Wye near Symonds Yat.
Whether you prefer to stay on dry land or take to the water, the Wye Valley is a holiday experience not to be missed.

Arweiniad i weithgareddau yn Swydd Henffordd
Mae’r daith gerdded bwrpasol ar hyd Dyffryn Gwy yn dilyn cwrs yr afon drwy dir fferm ffrwythlon a gall y teithiwr blinedig fwynhau seibiant yn un o’r nifer o dafarndai a llefydd gwely a brecwast sy’n agos at yr afon. Mae nifer o’r sefydliadau hyn wedi ennill gwobrau, gan gyfuno steil a chysur gyda bwyd a diod lleol o’r safon uchaf. Pa well ffordd sydd o leddfu poen eich corff ar ôl diwrnod o gerdded na bwyta cig eidion Henffordd neu gig oen y Gororau ac yfed gwin neu seidr lleol?
Mae mwy a mwy o bobl yn mwynhau teithio yng nghefn gwlad ar gefn beic, a ph’run a ydych chi’n dod â’ch beiciau eich hunain neu’n llogi rhai yn lleol, mae lonydd distaw Swydd Henffordd yn dod â chi yn ôl i’r Afon Gwy gan amlaf. Mae arweinlyfrau bach ar gael sy’n cynnwys manylion teithiau beic cylchol yn ogystal ag awgrymiadau ar gyfer teithiau sy’n cadw at lan yr afon. Gweler www.visitherefordshire.co.uk am fwy o fanylion am y teithiau hyn a theithiau eraill yn y sir.
Mae’n bosibl iawn mai canŵ-wyr sy’n cael yr olygfa orau o’r afon ac mae yna ganolfannau proffesiynol sy’n darparu offer a hyfforddiant yn y Gelli Gandryll a Symonds Yat. Byddwch wrth eich bodd yn padlo tuag at ddinas Henffordd a’i heglwys gadeiriol neu tuag at y Rhosan ar Wy, gan basio ystadau gwledig a choedwigoedd. Mae yna lawer o lefydd angori i chi gael stopio, ymestyn eich coesau a mwynhau’r golygfeydd a’r dreftadaeth leol.
Os oes gennych amser i’w sbario, beth am fynd i Henffordd ei hun ac ymweld â’r eglwys gadeiriol hanesyddol neu un o’r gerddi niferus ger yr afon, fel Brobury House neu How Caple Court. Tref ddeniadol gyda siopau diddorol ar lan yr afon yw Rhosan ar Wy tra bod Castell Goodrich yn edrych i lawr dros yr Afon Gwy o’i lecyn uchel ger Symonds Yat.
P’run a yw’n well gennych aros ar dir sych neu deithio ar y dŵr, mae Dyffryn Gwy yn cynnig profiad gwyliau heb ei ail.
