History of the River Yare

The broads area shallow lakes, created by people digging for peat fuel from the 9th to the 13th Century. They became flooed in the 14th century as sea levels rose. The River Yare connects a number of these broads and comes out the the sea at the place that bars its name: Yarmouth.
