Boating along the Royal Military Canal

Between Appledore and Iden Lock, the Royal Military Canal has several low bridges and obstructions. A dam 800 metres south west of Appledore Bridge obstructs the canal, and Iden Lock itself is also closed.

Consequently, through navigation is not possible, and there is no access from the River Rother (East) which runs from Bodiam Castle to Rye. However, if you're prepared to lift your canoe out of the water past the obstructions, canoeing is permitted all the way from Iden Lock to West Hythe. An Environment Agency licence is required (Tel: 01797 223256).

At the eastern end of the Royal Military Canal, it's easy to get afloat. You can hire rowing boats at Hythe and explore this scenic section from the water. Shepway District Council controls the canal through Hythe, from West Hythe to the Seabrook outfall. Motor boats are not allowed, but you can canoe this section.
