Cycling along the Royal Military Canal

There are no designated cycle routes along the Royal Military Canal. If you're determined to follow the canal route, the Military Road from Rye to Appledore runs along the banks of the canal, and offers easy cycling on a quiet country lane. However, with a high bank between the canal and the road, you won't see as much of the waterway as you might like.

Romney Marsh, alongside the Canal, is ideal for cycling due to its quiet country lanes, flat routes and beautiful, quintessentially English countryside. As part of the Romney Marsh Countryside Project, cycling routes have been created for all levels of cyclist, such as the award-winning 'Romney Marsh Meanders' - five self-guided cycle rides ranging from 10 to 42 miles. All are waymarked to make it easy to follow the right path.

The RMCP also run free guided cycling events throughout the year, including the Shepway Cyclethon. Thirty-two cycle stands are available across the region.

Cycle hire is available from Romney Cycles, 77 High Street, New Romney. Tel: 01797 362155, Rye Hire, Rye, East Sussex (Tel: 01797 223033) or Activ, The Shakespeare Centre, 145 Sandgate Road, Folkestone (Tel: 01303 240110).

For further information, contact the Romney Marsh Countryside Project, Age Concern, Rolfe Lane, New Romney, Romney Marsh, Kent. TN28 8JR. Tel/Fax: 01797 367934. Website: www.rmcp.co.uk.

In addition, the National Cycle Network Route Two from Sustrans - the South Coast Trail - runs from Dover to Portsmouth. The route passes through the Marsh initially along lanes that are periodically bordered by hedges of Hawthorn, Blackthorn and Willow, then out into the open country where there are excellent views over the surrounding area. There are lots of little characteristic villages en route. Eventually it reaches the picturesque Cinque Port town of Rye and historic Winchelsea.
