Walking along the Rutland Water
Whether you're feeling energetic or simply after an afternoon walk, there's sure to be a walk to suit at Rutland Water.
For a full day's walking, you can tackle the main 17-mile circuit of the reservoir - with an extra six-mile diversion around the Hambleton Peninsula available for the really dedicated.
But for a more relaxed time, simply park in one of the four waterside car parks and take a stroll. Our recommended walks are:
- From Barnsdale (North Shore): Walk to Whitwell Car Park and back. A secluded woodland walk, with good opportunities for bird-watchers in the waterside hides along the way.
- From Whitwell (North Shore): Walk either through the woods to Barnsdale Car Park or along the shore to Sykes Lane.
- From Sykes Lane (North Shore): Walk across the dam to Normanton Church and Car Park. Watch out for sheep feeding on piles of carrots on the dam!
- From Normanton (South Shore): Walk past the church, across the dam, to Sykes Lane.
Refreshments are available from cafes at all four car parks, and there are often ice-cream vans in summer.
