Cycling along the Selby Canal

Cycling down the towpath is a real joy. Look out for local natural wildlife, wildfowl, plants and trees along the way. Please bear in mind that walkers have priority along the towpath and be prepared to dismount if necessary, and always under bridges.

The stretch from Selby Swing Bridge to Burn Bridge (3.1km) is open to cyclists. Please be especially careful between Selby Lock and Selby Swing Bridge, as motor vehicles also have access to this short stretch of path. You should cycle with great care and courtesy to others, observing the Waterways Code for Cyclists. You must display a valid British Waterways cycling permit on your cycle at all times and you can download one for free.

Other local cycle routes include:

  • Selby and York Cycle Path (15 miles)
  • Howden to Selby Cycle Route and Footpath (part of the main Trans-Pennine Trail)
