Wildlife along the Selby Canal
The area boasts a variety of wildflowers, birds and butterflies. The area around Selby has loads of beautiful places to visit, including:
- Barlow Common Nature Reserve - a 100 acre reclaimed site with a whole range of habitats such as reed-beds, ponds, woodland and open meadows.
- Bishopwood - an 850 acre 'Open Forest' of deciduous varieties and conifers. You'll also see a number of species of birds, squirrels and even the majestic deer.
- Brayton Barff - a 180ft hill in an area of some 80 acres which has a mature oak woodland and plenty of birds.
- Fairburn Ings Nature Reserve - 600 acres of wetland off the A1 and supervised by the RSPB. You will see all types of waterfowl and birds here all year round, including shooper swans, redshanks, lapwings and snipes. Migrants like little gulls, yellow wagtails and terns also visit in the spring and autumn seasons.
- Skipwith Common Nature Reserve - 500 acres of lowland heath, managed by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust. Plenty of insects and birdlife to be seen. <.
