Boating along the Shropshire Union Canal

Boating the Shropshire Union south of Nantwich is a unique experience. There are long stretches without any locks or canalside villages. Only the birds (and the seemingly ubiquitous sheep) interrupt the quiet of the countryside.

The two longest flights of locks on this stretch are the 15 at Audlem and the five at Tyrley near Market Drayton. Sleepy Audlem is one of the most attractive canalside towns anywhere in Britain, and has two excellent waterside pubs.

North of Nantwich, the canal connects with the Llangollen Canal and the Middlewich Branch. The rest of the main line to Chester and Ellesmere Port is best treated as a cul-de-sac for pleasure boaters. There are connections to the River Dee and Manchester Ship Canal, but these waterways require specialist local knowledge. That said, the trip to the Shropshire Union's terminus and the fascinating Boat Museum is a must for any waterway enthusiast.
