Broad boats up to around 13ft 6in beam can access this section via the River Dee Branch, but cannot pass under the M53 into Ellesmere Port.
All locks except Beeston Iron Lock are at least 14ft wide. Beeston Iron Lock (13ft 5in) is distorted and two narrowboats are recommended not to share: if they do, they must keep well back from the bottom gates.
At the M53 bridges (146a and 147a), the narrowest point is 10ft 11in.
