  1. Stoppage: Lower Basin Washwall to Wide Lock Approach, Ellesmere Port

    24 Jul 2006 until further notice

    UPDATE (19 April 2010): Feasiblity studies are currently underway to determine the scope of the repair works required to the lower basin washwall on the Bottom Wide Lock approach. Passage continues to be unavailable for wide beamed craft until further notice.


    Due to structural failure of the dock wall, Whitby Wide Bottom Lock has been closed on safety grounds until further notice while investigation works are completed. Further updates will be available shortly. British Waterways apologises for any inconvenience caused.

    Update: The wall has now been stabilised at this lock. From Thursday 17 August 2006 it will be possible for passage to be made through the narrow lock as normal. For swing bridge operation, the Cheshire West & Chester Council should be contacted direct as usual. Monitoring of the wall will continue until a permanent solution has been completed. The wide lock will remain closed until that point.

    Passage is available if booked 7 days in advance T 01606 723800 during normal office hours Monday to Friday. Tidal constraints apply and there will be an out of hours passage charge of £131.40 plus VAT.

  3. Restriction: Dredging Works from Audlem Lock 15 to Adderley Bridge 69

    The works are to bring the canal up to Minimum Open Channel Compliance and dredge moorings.
    Boaters should approach the dredger with caution and await a signal from the dredger driver or banksmen to pass. Users may be delayed up to 30mins max.
    Users should note, restrictions to the towpath are only in force while offloading takes place but in most cases no delays will occur.
