History of the Ulverston Canal
The canal opened in 1796, 14ft deep and capable of accommodating ships up to 100ft long and 27ft wide. It was badly affected by railway competition, and was eventually acquired and closed by local railway companies. The canal is still in water, though not currently navigable.
